The organization's purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation, and lasting peace amongst all peoples. The American Red Cross' response to the tsunami has focused on community health and disease control, disaster preparedness, and community restoration and rebuilding. The organization reports "Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the people who donated to the American Red Cross, we will hear more children laughing, more women chattering, and the increasingly loud sounds of hammers driving those nails home."
